There’s something special about arriving on the training ground before everyone else. The grass is still damp with morning dew, the birds are beginning to stir, and for a few quiet moments it's just you, the dogs and the countryside.
While every training day looks slightly different, the aim is always the same: helping handlers and their dogs grow in confidence together.
Here's a look behind the scenes from one of our recent training days at Millroe Gundogs.
Preparation starts well before the first dog arrives.
Dummies are laid out across the ground, scenting areas are checked, retrieves are planned and equipment is organised for the day ahead. Every exercise is designed with a purpose, whether that's improving steadiness, building confidence or introducing a new challenge.
Planning the day carefully means every dog can work at a level that's appropriate for their experience.
One of the best parts of every training day is seeing familiar faces alongside new handlers joining us for the first time.
Dogs arrive full of enthusiasm, and it's always rewarding to watch them settle into the rhythm of the morning.
Some are taking their very first steps into gundog training, while others are preparing for the coming shooting season. Despite their different experience levels, every dog receives the same calm, patient approach.
Rather than rushing through exercise after exercise, we focus on quality.

Not every achievement is dramatic.
Sometimes the biggest success is a dog sitting calmly while another works.
Sometimes it's a young puppy recalling perfectly for the first time.
Sometimes it's simply a nervous handler leaving with a little more confidence than when they arrived.
These small moments are what long-term progress is built upon.
We believe dogs learn best when they're calm and engaged.
There's plenty of encouragement, lots of conversation and no pressure to be perfect.
Training should be enjoyable for both dog and handler. That positive environment helps build trust, confidence and stronger partnerships long after the day has finished.
As the afternoon draws to a close, tired dogs begin to settle and handlers head home with plenty to practise.
Every session ends with clear advice on what to work on next, because progress doesn't stop when you leave the training ground.
It's the consistency between sessions that makes the biggest difference.
